Cost of living in UK

There are other costs associated to studying in the UK besides tuition fees and accommodation costs. You also have to keep aside money for essentials such as food, transport, clothing and medication. There is no fixed cost of living rate in the UK as different areas have different rates of living.

Additional costs

Apart from all these costs, there are some other one-off costs you have to bear in mind when moving to the UK. This includes visa application fees, insurance for travel, medical and contents, registration with police and travel to and from the airport in the UK and your home country.

Types of student accommodation in UK

Once your UK university application is approved, you have to find out the best accommodation for yourself. As mentioned above, first year students are guaranteed on campus accommodation while you have to look for off campus accommodation in the second year.

You can choose from the properties the university offers or find your own accommodation. During the third year, you are once again given guaranteed campus accommodation.

Campus universities usually have accommodation located a short distance from the university. The benefit of living here is that you are close to university facilities like library and students’ union and are comparatively safer.

However, if your university is located in London or another major city, your accommodation and other buildings of the university will be scattered around the university campus. This way, you may not be so close to the students’ facilities if you choose to stay in the university’s student residences.

Weekly rent at universities can be between £50 – 100, depending on the standard of the student accommodation. When looking for off campus accommodation, you could start your search from the university’s estates services where you may find lots of properties they manage on behalf of local landlords.

However don’t limit your search here; check with local estate agents offering student accommodation. Check out their websites and choose your property based on area, additional costs you have to bear as mentioned above, and its rental price.
